Meet Rukmani Riar, the IAS topper who had failed Class 6 exams

There was a time when Rukmani Riar had moved to a boarding school, and was unable to cope up with the pressure. After failing class 6 exams in Dalhousie’s Sacred Heart School, it is because of her undying passion that she bounced back and became the UPSC all-India second topper of the 2011 batch. She cracked the Civil Services exam in her first attempt.

Born and brought up in Chandigarh, the 29-year-old holds a master’s degree in social entrepreneurship from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai where she consistently topped her class. “Ever since I failed in Class 6, I am scared of failure. It can be very depressing. But after that incident, I made up my mind that I won’t sulk and complain. I will work hard and give things my best. I believe that if one decides to persevere and come out of that phase, nothing can stop you achieving success,” Rukmani told

Rukmani loves to write poetry, and is a believer of hard work and dedication. She cracked the civil services with political science and sociology as her main subjects. In an interview , Rukmani said, “My hard work has paid off and I am very happy. I credit my parents, teachers, friends, and above all god for the success. My message to aspiring candidates is that consistency, hard work, and persistence is the key to success. Go for it. If I can do it, everybody else can, and nothing can stop you.”
