Bhawna Garg IAS Topper Rank 1 of CSE 1998 IIT Kanpur Graduate

Bhawna Garg is a graduate from IIT Kanpur hailing from Punjab.
For the Civil Services Exam, a very different kind of approach is required. There are three stages in this Exam Preparation-Though, work, then deed, and not anyone of them being less important than other.

What helped her to crack the exam:

Competition Success Review is indeed providing an appropriate guidance to a student aspiring for the civil Services. She admitted that this column has been greatly helpful in ensuring success in that premiere exam.

Preparation strategy:

Bhawna Garg prepared for the exam as, during the Practise Test she tried to complete the paper 10 minutes earlier than the scheduled time (Duration: 2 hours) for in the Exam Hall, in the Hot Summers, one can never be sure of the comfortable conditions. Also signing the Attendance sheets and certain few announcements being made by the invigilators at intervals may be distracting and time-consuming. Prelim is just a qualifying Exam, so  her eyes were always directed on the Mains. Still she devoted one full month of May exclusively for it to avoid any risk so that later she can prepare comfortably for the mains  without having any apprehensions about her clearing the first stage. The generally accepted strategy for this Exam is that one must have studied the whole syllabus for the Mains before the Prelims or at least before its result is out, i.e. By July end. But I must admit that it wasn’t the case with her.
Bhawna Garg IAS
After Prelims she preferred to take a 3-4 days rest break, she prepared a work plan for the next 5 months. She knew that revision is very important, still it was only by August end that she could finish off syllabus once. With just two months before the Exam, This was a bit demoralising and at times. She says she felt that to be out of the race, but keeping my expectations low, still she was determined not to let the spirit go down.
The next two months, she divided into three slots of 20 days, each for the three subjects. At first, she revised Maths wholly followed by Chemistry and then GS till the General Studies paper on 30th October. She couldn’t do any special study for the Essay paper. However, the high calibre essays for Civil Services published by CSR proved immensely useful in giving an insight of the methodology to attempt the next 15 days for Math Paper exclusively and then the next 10 days for the Chemistry Paper. So a sufficient gap in between the Exam proved really beneficial to her.

Tea-stall owner's son an IAS topper

In this day and age of clamour for reservations and high fees that the educational institutes charge to keep the poor out – here is a smart young kid with some confidence who has made to the top of the Civil Services Exam in India – arguably the toughest test of the brightest in the land!
A story worth reading!!
Babaji Sahoo’s ramshackle teastall in a non-descript village of Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district has suddenly become the focus of the entire neighbourhood.
Sahoo’s son Manoj has done the entire area proud by finishing 34th in the Civil Services examination this year.
“I only hoped that he will become a school teacher, not an IAS. But he has surprised everyone,” 62-year-old Sahoo said.
Overwhelmed at the achievement of Manoj, residents of Singarpur village in Balikuda block, took out a procession to celebrate his success last Sunday where the elders blessed the youngman. “Poverty cannot be a hurdle if you have determination and if one is willing to do hard work,” Manoj told the happy gathering.
“It’s all due to the grace of god. My obedient son showed a spark of brilliance right from childhood. We are poor but I never neglected my son’s studies,” Sahoo said.
He earned a meagre amount from the tea shop, that too in a village. “But I never neglected my son’s education. Whatever I earned went towards his studies,” an emotional Sahoo said.
“Now I am thinking of closing down the teastall,” he said, his voice betraying emotion.
Manoj, 26, who also taught in classes at a science study centre at Jagatsinghpur to earn a few extra rupees to meet his requirement, had a career entirely spent in the sylvan surroundings of his village.
He studied at the Sailabala High School at Panchupandab and then joined the Swami Vivekananda Memorial College at Jagatsinghpur, the district headquarter town. He did his BSc in agriculture from the College of Agriculture and Technology at Chiplima in Sambalpur district.
He did MSc in agriculture from Junagarh university in Gujarat.
After doing his post-graduation, he heeded the advice of a friend and moved to Delhi to prepare for the civil service examination. “I did not attend any coaching classes nor pay any hefty fees. It has also proved the impression that students from public schools alone can do well in these exams is a myth,” he said.
“He was a bright student and by becoming an IAS he has done his village proud,” Judhistir Das, a teacher at Sailabala High School, Manoj’s alma mater, said.

Ashima Jain
Delhi girl Ashima Jain secures seventh position, first among women in Civil Services exam
NEW DELHI: Adapa Karthik of Khammam in Andhra Pradesh, who has topped the Civil Services Examination-2007 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, is playing down his achievement.
“I am still thinking whether to opt for the Indian Administrative Service or continue with my training at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad. Honestly, I am a little indifferent to the result. The civil service is such an exam where there is not much difference between the person who has topped and the one who has secured the 200th rank.”
“It is an academic achievement. My real accomplishment would be when I am able to sustain my hard work and even 30 years later my work is recognised,” said the 28-year-old achiever, who wants to interact with students and motivate them to work for rural development of the country.
An MBBS graduate from the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha, Karthik is now undergoing training at the National Police Academy. He cleared the Indian Police Service in 2004 and 2006 when he secured the 166th and 148th rank respectively.

Ms. Manju Rajpal IAS Topper from 2000 Batch Study Strategy

IAS Topper Success Stories Ms. Manju Rajpal, IAS Topper among Women 2000 Batch, Ms. Manju Rajpal is now Deputy Secretary Ministry of Rural Development Posted at New Delhi. She Was District Magistrate (DM) of Ajmer before.
Hard work and success go hand in hand. Isn’t it true.to be IAS is not an easy task .there are lots of stuff to do like preparing yourself for exams, interviews, serving your country etc.
Obstacles are those faithful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal (lines by henry ford)Those who have dreams and goals, have to keep faith in their capabilities. The first step towards success is to choose your goal and have strong determination.it is easy to dream but difficult to convert it into reality. For this you have to put great efforts, hard work, you should have patience and self-confidence.
If your decision is backed by an honest assessment of a positive aspect of your capacity or capability, then proceed towards your goal in the right direction and, believe me, no obstacle on the way can ever stop you on your path. It’s the fact sometimes you may have success but sometimes you may fail but it doesn’t mean you are a failure keep in mind to NEVER GIVE UP. Believe in yourself and be the best this time.
Starting in the right direction is by having the right selection of books. Choose the correct study material as this the first and most important part in IAS. You might have seen many candidates studying a lot which is hardly necessary. Therefore, don’t waste your energy. Take a decision on the basis of the nature of your Optional whether the extensive or intensive study is required. Always use authentic and dependable study material brought out by standard publishers. This will help you most.
You must be quite serious in the selection of your subjects. Some subjects are scoring and that the chances of success are then rated quite high. This is a wrong method of subject selection.
Ms. Manju Rajpal IAS Topper from 2000 Batch Study Strategy

Subject-selection should be always based on your:

  1. Interest in the subject
  2. Availability of study material and
  3. Your ability to understand the nature of that subject
Preparation for civil Services requires right time-management. If there is something very valuable, it is ‘Time”. In the civil services exam it is a tool to success .it is an essential part.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Strategy to prepare must be effective and efficient.
  • Follow one step at one time but keep a broad sight while start preparing for Mains and Interview with Prelims.
  • Do not scared regarding negative marking in Prelims.
  • Time Management is very crucial.
  • Keep your self-confidence good while appearing for the Prelims and the Mains, then only you can attempt the Question Paper in a reasonably logical way. If your confidence is low this may cause a trouble for you making you confuse and you may forget your answers.
  • Prelims-it may be alright to answer objective questions on the basis of intelligent guesswork
  • Mains-logical and fact-based and to the point answer are desirable.
  • General Studies- if you do not know the answer to a particular question, it is risky to attempt it with guesswork or on the basis of wrong information.
  • Essay Pape- choose a proper topic you are more familiar with. Always be careful that it should contain not only factual or informative data but there should also be an analytical presentation.
  • Interview- keep in mind that no Training institute can improve your personality completely although some of these Institutes provide help through well-planned preparation.

Dr Shah Faisa(UPSC-2009 TOPPER)- True Inspirational Story

Some stories appeal to your heart , some stories appeal to your soul. Dr Faisal's shah story does both. It is true story of triumph of a ordinary man against extra ordinary challenges of life.

Faisal was born in Kashmir , the place which is blessed by nature to the extent that many call it heaven. Unfortunately the same place has become one of most dangerous place in the world since last 20 years.

India and Pakistan's one of main dispute in this place. Since last 20 years thousands have lost their life because of terrorism which bleeds India . The land which both India and Pakistan claim and land which has become reasons for war between India and Pakistan .

Dr Faisal was born in same Kashmir. Dr Faisal Shah's life shattered when his father was gunned down by unidentified man . Faisal shah was just 9 years old at that time. Faisal's father was school teacher.Mebenna begum (Faisal's mother) had three children to take care of after death of faisal's father.

Education was only thing which could have seen faisal's passport to success . He studied hard and bright student faisal topped 10th exam. He pursued MBBS from srinagar medical college and became doctor.

He became concerned citizen too and participated actively in RTI  Movement in Kashmir. His urge to make a difference made him give Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and he has become first kashmiri to top UPSC exams , one of toughest exams in India.

Dr Faisal shah's story is truly an inspirational and motivational story. It is not easy to see one's father die from a bullet . It is not easy to be a kashmiri and appear for UPSC exams either. Terrorist  do not encourage people to become part of Indian system and they have got guns to silence those who don't share their point of view.

Kashmiri do deserve a normal life which has been time and again hindered due to dispute between India and Pakistan. India claims entire kashmir as its own. It has backing of agreed partition formula which gave right to kings to merge with India or Pakistan or remain independent as per their wish.

King of kashmir decided to go with India and so India claims that merger of kashmir in India is perfectly legal.

Pakistan on other hand calls India's claim on kashmir as illegal. Kashmir had Muslim dominance (it still has) and partition was done on basis of religion . It wants united nations to conduct voting of people.

Kashmir remained peaceful till lates 80s after which militancy started in the valley. Most experts believe it to be side effect of success which Jihadis backed by ISI got against USSR in afghanistan.

India had been fighting this terrorism which in valley since 20 years. Pakistan on  other hand deny playing any role in terrorism but accepts providing moral and political support to what is calls 'freedom struggle of kashmiris'

It is too sensitive matter for India as well as pakistan. Any political party in India becoming lenient regarding kashmir would be thrown out of Indian politics. While pakistan regime showing any concession regarding kashmir would have same fate in Pakistan.

So it is catch 22 situation and prise in being paid by kashmiris. Dr Faisal Shah stands tall because of these issues. He has proven that inspite of tough circumstances both personal and political ones , any human being who is determined to succeed would succeed.

She read newspapers and magazines to get a better understanding of current events.
Despite her busy IRS training schedule in Nagpur, she dedicated 5 − 6 hours a day in preparing for the 2011 examination. It must be noted here the she had already cleared Civil Services Exam  once still she felt a need of 5-6 hours of study everyday.
She says “When it comes to preparation for the UPSC, there can be no shortcut. Obviously, since I had taken the exam once before, I had a certain edge. There were no surprises this year.”

Tests for self Evaluation

When asked about how did she kept herself motivated, she says “Yes She took part in tests to find out her shortcoming and correct her weaknesses, it worked as both warning and motivation at times.”

Optional Subject

Being a doctor her obvious choice was Medical Science and another related subject she opted for Psychology. She did not experimented to explore new and relatively unknown area but with a clear mind opted a set of optional subjects with which she was comfortable.
Every beginner has many questions while choosing optional subjects. Sneha was well versed in Medical Science as a paper but most of aspirants are not quite friendly with any of listed subjects and find himself equally weak in all. In such case aspirants need to go through NCERT books before deciding any subject. Don’t judge your like or dislike unless you get a taste of dish. Unless you will read these books you can’t become sure about your inclination.

Previous UPSC IAS Exam Attempts before Becoming IAS Exam Topper

This was her Third attempt.
In her previous attempt she secured 305 rank and joined Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) – IRS (IT) and was undergoing training in Nagpur while she got selected as IAS Topper in the IAS exam of 2011-12.

Mr.B.Satheesh Balanan IPS officer of batch 2004

Mr.B.Satheesh Balanan IPS officer of batch 2004, has worked at various colleges and schools as a lecturer and PG teacher in Chennai. He has done his M.Sc. in Physics from Govt. Art College, Coimbatore and schooling from Coimbatore Corporation’s school at Masakalipalayam. After his induction in Indian Police Services as an officer he has worked as ASP under training at Kurukshetra and also at Panipat. Later on, he has served as DCP in Gurgaon, Haryana and is currently working as Superintendent of Police at Jind. His deep commitment and dedication to duty in tackling crime and criminals in Jind demonstrated his excellent leadership ability. He spent time in understanding the criminal’s behaviour in his District and went all out against them.
A very Inspirational nd Motivational story of an IPS Officer–
Mr. B. Sateesh Balan IPS
******************************************
(“I have faced very bad times. The situation was so bad that I had only Rs. 4 or Rs. 5 to fend for myself for three days in Chennai”)
Coimbatore: Are you looking for a fact which looks a fiction? Here is one. The life and struggles of 33-year-old B. Satheesh Balan deserves to be ranked
among the ‘Slumdog’ category. But here luck has played little role even
as the oft-quoted adage “no free lunch” echoes in every sinew of Balan’s family
which had to forego lunch on many an occasion.
“Many a time the only lunch, that too provided by my friend, was groundnuts,”
remarks Mr. Balan. Now he is an IPS officer of the Haryana cadre. And as ASP, Panipet, he was the one who investigated the Samjauta Express tragedy which claimed more than 50 lives. He hails from Arasur, a sleepy village in Coimbatore district, and had his education from a panchayat union elementary school there up to Standard IV. Then he had to shift to the Corporation elementary school at Masakalipalayam. Mr. Balan tells G. Satyamurty about the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that he had to face to become what he is. “I was born to parents who were active trade unionists and it was an inter-caste marriage as well in 1960s. To be frank, it was my mother who fed me through her tailoring as my father was involved in jobs only of non-permanent nature. He was more often than not acting like mother attending to household chores.
Then I had to shift to the NGR Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, to study
up to Class X. As a student and school pupil leader, I chose to sing a song in praise of the veteran trade union leader after whom the institution was named.
Whereas, my father was sent out of the same school for refusing to sing the same
questioning the rationale behind it.”
“Then I did not have even a chappal, which I used to borrow from friends. The
minimum that was insisted by the school was uniform and chappal. “Even I.C.Govindasamy, the Head Master with a heart of gold, was irritated when I
told him I could not afford even a chappal. He was the one who was instrumental in improving my English and discipline.”
Similarly, he recollects the kind- heartedness of his Standard IX teacher
Jayalakshmi, who gave him two new shirts on seeing him switch his seat in
the class to cover up his torn shirt from the view of girl students. “Besides, I used to work as a petrol pump attendant, especially at night, during weekends.”
After doing Plus Two in Sarvajana Higher Secondary School, he graduated and
post-graduated in physics from the Government Arts College, Coimbatore. “I joined B.Sc. Physics in Tamil medium, just for the sake of getting the
scholarship of Rs. 180 per semester.”
His academic attainments could be
achieved only through the sacrifice of his
elder brother, who quit studies to join a
private company. In 1998, Mr. Balan left for Chennai to join
two of his friends preparing for Civil
Services. Then he was absorbed as a PG
Assistant in a CBSE school for a “princely”
salary of Rs. 1,800. Attacks twice from typhoid and once
from a viral fever took away 15 kg and
he had to seek the help of his father once
again for the domestic chores. “In 2001, I cleared the preliminary as
well as the main examinations and the
results came in 2002.” However, he could
not get through the interview. Next year, he joined the Civil Services
Coaching Academy of the GRD Trust,
Coimbatore, and emerged successful on
May 7, 2004. “Now, I am the
Superintendent of Police, Jind.”
“Hailing from lower middle class, I have
faced very bad times. The situation was so bad that I had only
Rs. 4 or Rs. 5 to fend for myself for three
days in Chennai. Even when I was a PG
Teacher at a T.Nagar School, I had to
change a number of restaurants so that I
could pay them slightly later. When I was staying in a mansion with my
friends so that I need not pay any rent, I
had to run out even in odd hours to
escape from the frequent raids.” Even as a teacher he could afford only
meals that cost Rs. 5. “You may very well imagine the quality
of such food.” Mr. Balan admits that coming from a
trade union environment he had lots of
prejudices and was moulded into a
particular ideology. It was his wife, who
made him see the reality.
“To become a successful professional, I
had to change a lot and give up a lot of
prejudices. I was not a man with
progressive ideas. Though she was just a
matriculate, she had a far clearer vision
and now even my social vision has changed.
”According to Mr. Balan, the major
problem with regard to mofussil
candidates attempting the Civil Services
examination is “lack of confidence.”
